Review about the film "Memento" by Christopher Nolan
The movie "Memento" directed by Christopher Nolan, which is based on short story "Memento Mori", which written by his brother Jonathan. Christopher wrote the screenplay himself, and made a film in record time - just over twenty-five days of filming - and a record low budget - a total of nine million dollars.
The main feature of the movie - the story, told backwards.
This has two effects. On the one hand, the author keeps the audience in
suspense, because in each of the next episode of the characters and the
situation surrounding the main character, in which he finds himself, are not
those who and what seemed a moment before. On the other hand, only in the end
of the film it becomes clear the depth of the catastrophe of life of Leonard.
Even after a few viewings I can not predict what next scene will come. The spectators, thus, are in the same situation
with the main character - they are as Leonard , do not know what was five
minutes ago, and why he was at this time, in this place, in such condition.
So, the film served as a ten-minute intervals - within which
the hero is able to remember something - unrolling the story back to the
beginning of the finals, and the main intrigue of the film becomes not the
traditional "what it will end!?", but reversive "from what did
it start?".
In this Nolan’s work, there are 2 timelines. The audience
can immediately distinguish them by the visual effects. One of them is the colour
and the other one is black and white. At first, when in the film, these two
lines intersect, you can easily get lost in the chronological story of the
film. But then you notice that the colour line, it is the reverse order of
events, and black and white - direct.
In conclusion, it is not secret that film is perfect. The plot thought deeply and properly. One view may seem insufficiently to penetrate completely in the art of cinematography, so you should take the time to Nolan's work.
